    Music and movement activities are exactly what they sound like. These are activities that incorporate gross motorskills and elements of fine motor skills with music.     Music and movement activities are a great way to help children learn and develop their motor skills; both fine motor skills and gross motor skills. They can also be used to enhance cognitive development, creativity, andsocial-emotional development.

    Simon Says “Dance”

    We all know the game “Simon Says”. Add a musical twist to the game by putting on some music and using some fun gross motor verbs. You can even use action verb flashcardsand draw them out of a hat.

    Obstacle Course

    Put on some music, lay out some stepping stonesand set up some chairs, and get moving to some background music.

    Musical Chairs

    Musical chairs is a classic music and movement activity. Set up your chairs in a straight line, every other chair facing the opposite direction, then start the music. When the music stops, everyone takes a seat. Traditionally, this is played with one less chair than players, then one chair is removed per round. For a non-competition version, simply keep the number of chairs equal to the number of children. It's still tons of fun!

    • If You’re Happy. This is a somewhat different take on “If You’re Happy and You Know It.” The If You’re Happy activity combines singing, motor skills and exploration of emotions.
    • We are the Dinosaurs. What kid could pass up the chance to stomp around the room? We are the Dinosaurs is a fun activity that combines singing, marching to rhythm, and various hand motions.
    • Little Bunny Foo Foo. An old favourite, Little Bunny Foo Foo tells a funny story in song. Kids take part by singing and adding hand movements.
    • Scarf or Ribbon Dancing. Children hold silk scarves or long ribbons to twirl around in the air. Play relaxing classical music for them to sway to as they begin to feel calmer.
    • Freeze dance. This is a great activity to do with the whole family. Put on some music and start dancing. When the music stops, everyone freezes. Older children are ‘out’ if they continue to move when the freeze part arrives.
    • Musical chairs. This is a classic game kids love. Participants walk around chairs placed in a circle or a row and sit down when the music stops. Skip the elimination part for this game too.
    • Scarf dancing. Classical music is very soothing. Add in some dancing and you have a fun game that toddlers, parents, and caregivers can find relaxing. Give toddlers a scarf and let them dance while moving the scarves around their bodies.
    • Marching. Marching to music is a super simple activity and a beneficial one for the body and the mind. Put on a tune with a distinctive beat. Show your toddler how to march to the music.
    • Reindeer Pokey. The Turkey Trot was such a hit last month that I know the kids will enjoy this Christmas version of the Hokey Pokey. (Tune: Hokey Pokey)
    • We Wish You a Merry Christmas. The simplicity of this song will make it very easy for the preschoolers in our house to remember, and the simple hand movements will be great for encouraging the babies to join in.
    • The Lights on the Tree. If you haven’t noticed, I love to use songs that build on the kids’ prior knowledge of familiar tunes. It helps them learn the songs and focus on the actions.
    • Away in a Manger. Love to Know Christmas has another great list of Christmas songs. I really liked this first verse of Away in a Manger.
