The Matewan Historic District encompasses the town center of the rural coal mining community of Matewan, West Virginia.
Sid Hatfield, who escaped injury at the shootout in Matewan, became a symbol of the miners’ struggle against the tyranny and violence of the mine guard system. Today, the Ludlow Massacre Site and the Matewan Historic District are National Historic Landmarks.

The Battle of Matewan (also known as the Matewan Massacre) was a shootout in the town of Matewan in Mingo County and the Pocahontas Coalfield mining district, in southern West Virginia. It occurred on May 19, 1920 between local coal miners and their allies and the Baldwin–Felts Detective Agency .
On February 18, 1997, the Matewan Historic District was designated by the United States Department of the Interior as a National Historic Landmark. The designation was marked by a brief ceremony on May 19, 1997 -- Seventy-seven years after the infamous "Battle of Matewan".
