History. Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg Count Leopold Anton Eleutherius von Firmian (1679-1744) [2] commissioned the palace in 1736 on the shores of an existing pond after he had enriched himself in the process of expelling over 22,000 Protestants from Salzburg.
Since 1965, Schloss Leopoldskron has been well known far beyond Austria’s borders as an original shooting location for the world-famous movie “The Sound of Music”. Nowadays, it is a stopping point on many guided tours of the city, enchanting visitors with its rich history as well as its magical location.

Schloss Leopoldskron was considered by the location-scouts as a filming venue most likely due to Wolfgang Reinhardt’s contacts. At that time a white music pavilion stood in the palace park and played an important role in the film’s romantic scenes.
In 1740, the Salzburg court gardener and architect Franz Anton Danreiter (1695–1760) made an artistic rendering of the palace from plans. This shows the palace with a mansard roof and a turret. In later illustrations, however, the palace is seen in its current form without a mansard or turret.
Leopoldskron Castle was originally built with three floors and an octagonal tower in the centre. The paintings in the Festsaal hall ("The four seasons") and the chapel were done by Andreas Rensi in 1740. The painting on the ceiling of the chapel was done by Franz Anton Ebner in 1740 and depicts the "Wedding of Atalante".
Schloss Leopoldskron is not and never has been a museum, but since its construction it has been closely interwoven with art and culture.
