  1. May 30, 2014 · Yes, "A Million Ways to Die in the West" is about a man who gets dumped by one girl only to have a beauty of Theron’s caliber inexplicably fall head over cowboy boots for him. It’s a movie about how great Albert is and yet MacFarlane forgot to make him interesting.

  2. May 30, 2014 · While it offers a few laughs and boasts a talented cast, Seth MacFarlane's overlong, aimless A Million Ways to Die in the West is a disappointingly scattershot affair. Read...

As a fan of Seth MacFarlane's series Family Guy and his feature film debut Ted, it's a shame to report that if you've seen the trailers for his new western comedy A Million Ways to Die in the West then you've essentially seen the movie. All the biggest laughs, gags, and one-liners are contained within those promos. Even the movie's big cameo was revealed by the studio at CinemaCon, leaving precious little to find amusing once you're actually watching the film.

The film follows the formula of the likes of The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Shakiest Gun in the West, and The Paleface where a milquetoast finds himself thrown into the sort of violent scenario only the Wild West could concoct to make him man up. Albert Stark (MacFarlane) is a sheep farmer who lives on the outskirts of the desert frontier town of Old Stump with his surly, elderly parents. He talks his way out of confrontation, much to the chagrin of his girlfriend Louise (Amanda Seyfried), who finally ditches him in favor of Foy (Neil Patrick Harris), the local mustache grooming store owner (that's right).

Heartbroken, Albert falls to pieces until he meets the beautiful but mysterious Anna (Charlize Theron), who takes a shine to him and tries to help him buck up. After losing his temper and challenging Foy to a duel, Albert realizes he has no gunfighting skills and is utterly doomed. Not to fear. Anna is a crack shot and takes to training Albert, even as she withholds from him her ties to the territory's most dastardly outlaw, Clinch (Liam Neeson). Surprise surprise, events will find a way to ultimately pit Albert against Clinch in a showdown.

You'll likely enjoy A Million Ways to Die in the West far more if you've managed to avoid any of the trailers or commercials. There were hardly any big or memorable jokes in the film that weren't already included in its marketing materials. Most of the movie's depictions of the titular ways to die in the west were shown in promos. Ditto many of the best lines. You may still chuckle at experiencing the same jokes again, but not enough to make for a fully satisfactory theatrical viewing experience.

A Million Ways to Die in the West, Seth MacFarlane's follow-up to Ted, has a solid cast and holds promise, but the trailers simply gave all the best jokes away.

  5. A Million Ways to Die in the West, is a satirical comedy western that unfortunately does not deliver consistent quality of jokes. You will chuckle a few times sure, but as a whole this is not MacFarlane's best work.
