Her intensity prompts Steve to end the date prematurely by making up an excuse about work. Bullock gives as fine a performance here as she does in any film. SPOILER ALERT I love how in the end of the film, Mary redeems herself by saving that little girl in the mine shaft, it reminded me of the Jessica McClure incident. Steve is creeped out by her but in the end, even he praises her basic goodness.
