These 7 tips ...

Beaches on the Big Island are not as crowded as for example the beaches on Oʻahu or the beaches on Maui. Especially if you go to the more remote beaches during weekdays it is possible that you find the beach all to yourself. Being more remote also means that some beaches have limited basic facilities, so be sure to bring plenty of water and sunscre...

    • Manini’owali Beach at Kua Bay. Visually, Manini’owali Beach (referred to as Kua Bay by locals) is pretty hard to beat. Small, secluded, and striking, it’s easily our favorite of the three beaches located in Kekaha Kai State Park.
    • Kukio Keiki Beach at Kikaua Point Park. Kukio Keiki Beach at Kikaua Point Park wins the prize for the island’s calmest waters. This man-made, shallow lagoon is well protected from wind and surf, making it a perfect destination for kids and unconfident swimmers alike.
    • Pau’oa Bay at the Fairmont Orchid Hotel. Don’t let the close proximity to the Fairmont deter you! All beaches are public in Hawai’i so you need not be a resort guest to enjoy Pau’oa Bay.
    • Hapuna Beach. A staple of any “best of” Hawaii list, our recommendation for Hapuna Beach is hardly breaking news, but… we just couldn’t resist. Hapuna is one gorgeous beach.
    • Hapuna State Beach. The Big Island's most popular beach is located on the Kohala Coast on the northwestern shore of the island. This half-mile stretch of white sand is loved by many for its calm swimming conditions that are perfect for families with younger kids, as well as great for bodyboarding and snorkeling.
    • Manini'owali Beach. Also known as Kua Bay Beach, this white-sand beach sits on the western shore facing Kua Bay, just north of the town of Kona within the borders of Kekaha Kai State Park.
    • Kaunaoa Beach. This popular white-sand beach is located on the Kohala Coast close to Hapuna Beach, and is known for its swimming, snorkeling, and family atmosphere.
    • Punalu'u Beach. Punalu'u Beach sits on the eastern shore of Hawaii about halfway between Pahala and Naalehu just off the Mamalahoa Highway, making it incredibly easy to access.
