Cassandra Elizabeth Austen (9 January 1773 – 22 March 1845) was an amateur English watercolourist and the elder sister of Jane Austen. The letters between her and Jane form a substantial foundation to scholarly understanding of the life of the novelist.
Cassandra was midwife to the novels, and as proud of them as if they were her offspring. When Jane fell ill, she devoted herself to finding a cure. And when the end finally came, Jane died in her arms. Those churlish nieces and nephews—and all Jane Austen fans, indeed—should be on their knees in gratitude.
