Steele, Charles Kenzie. February 7, 1914 to August 19, 1980. The first vice president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), Reverend C. K. Steele shared Martin Luther King, Jr.’s vision of social equality through nonviolent means.
After him, the president was Charles Steele Jr., and in 2009, Howard W. Creecy Jr. Next were Isaac Newton Farris Jr. and C. T. Vivian, who took office in 2012. [contradictory] 1997 to present. In 1997, Martin Luther King III was unanimously elected to head the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, replacing Joseph Lowery.

Tuscaloosa native Charles W. Steele Jr. (1946- ) served as the president and CEO of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) from 2004 to early 2009. Steele served in the Alabama State Senate and was a member of the International States Parliament for Safety and Peace before assuming leadership of the SCLC.
