When the Lincoln County War erupted, he fought with the McSween faction alongside Billy the Kid and several others who would later become part of Billy the Kid’s Gang. After losing the war, both he and the Kid retreated to Fort Sumner, New Mexico, where Bowdre went to work as a cowboy.

That’s where it was on December 23, 1880 when a posse led by Lincoln County Sheriff Pat Garrett gunned Bowdre down at Stinking Springs.

Charlie Bowdre who was well known as one of Billy the Kid's friends during the Lincoln County War and part of the group known as the Regulators was born in Wilkes County Georgia in 1848. His family moved to Mississippi in 1854 where Charlie worked on his dad's farm.
The Lincoln County War brought him to the front, but several of the other Regulators were actually the driving force behind the events, and had a history of killing alongside one another prior to the war. Ab Saunders, Charlie Bowdre, Doc Scurlock, Frank Coe, and George Coe had previously killed rustlers together.
