    • 1. (1891–1974), US chief justice 1953–69. He did much to extend civil liberties, including the prohibition of segregation in schools. He is also remembered for heading the Warren Commission (1963–64), which investigated into the assassination of President Kennedy and concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald was the sole gunman.
