After he was grounded from Project Mercury W in 1962 for medical reasons, he became NASA's first Chief of Astronaut Office and Director of Flight Crew Operations. Deke remained Chief Astronaut till 1974 when he selected himself for the crew of Apollo 24 and was replaced temporarily by Buzz Aldrin.

An injury out there led to his death and it meant that somebody would have to take his place as Chief of the Astronaut Office.
