Celebrating 75 years of passenger service in 2004, Delta paints Boeing 767 The Spirit of Delta in a special paint scheme inspired by the 1940 livery of Douglas DC-3 Ship 41. The challenge was to replicate in gray paint the look of the DC-3’s unpainted, polished aluminum.

In January 2011, Delta celebrated 70 years as Atlanta's hometown airline by christening Boeing 777-200LR, N702DN, "The Spirit of Atlanta" with a virtual bottle of Coca-Cola. Delta's close ties with the city date back to 1941, when the airline moved its headquarters to Atlanta.

Spirit flew as an ambassador of Delta pride and culture for over 23 years. Painted in special liveries to celebrate 1996 Atlanta Olympics and Delta's 75th Anniversary in 2004. Retired on February 12, 2006, after flying 70,697 hours and 34,389 trip cycles.
Repainted in its original 1982 Delta livery, Spirit took off on a two-week cross-country, 12-stop Farewell Tour. Delta employees, friends and charities shared in Spirit's final flying days from February 21-March 6, 2006.
