The College was founded in 1584 by Sir Walter Mildmay, who was Chancellor of the Exchequer to Elizabeth I. Since then, we have been a centre of outstanding learning for over 400 years. Our members have gone on to achieve great successes across a variety of disciplines.
Emmanuel College was founded by Sir Walter Mildmay, chancellor of the exchequer to Queen Elizabeth I, on the site of a thirteenth-century Dominican Priory. It admitted its first students in November 1584, and by April 1585 there were more than 25 undergraduates in residence.

The inside is arranged in the traditional Cambridge college form of staircases. In 2022, it was internally refurbished and a new Social Hub constructed. New panoramic windows were added, and a garden court adapted from the former car & cycle park.
