Elisabeth Fritzl spent 24 years in captivity, confined to a cellar and repeatedly tortured at the hands of her own father.
On 28 August 1984, after Elisabeth turned 18, Fritzl lured her into the basement of the family home, saying that he needed help carrying a door. In reality, Fritzl had been converting the basement into a makeshift prison chamber; the door was the last thing he needed to seal it.

At a relatively young age of 21, in 1956, he married Rosemarie, a girl of 17. Together, they went on to have seven kids – three boys and four girls.
