Hosea Lorenzo Williams II, the eldest son of civil-rights leader Hosea Williams, Sr., died Monday, September 21, 1998, in North Carolina of complications from a bone marrow transplant performed 1 1/2 months ago. He was 43. Mr. Williams was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia last year.

During World War II, he served in Europe as a staff sergeant in an all black unit. Williams was the only member of his unit to survive a Nazi bombing. He spent a year in a European hospital before returning to the United States with a Purple Heart and a permanent limp.
