   • Nihon Kohden produced the first commercial pulse oximeter, the OLV-5100 in 1974 and patented it in Japan but not elsewhere. The device used an earpiece similar to Millikan’s 1940 oximeter, but it was not reliable enough for clinical use and the company ceased its development. Dr Aoyagi was consigned to work on other projects.
