Witherspoon married Angela Robinson in 1988. They raised two sons, John David ("J.D.") and Alexander. David Letterman was Witherspoon's best friend and is the godfather of his two sons. Witherspoon died of a heart attack at his home in Sherman Oaks, California, on October 29, 2019, at age 77.
In 1985, she traveled to the Cannes Film Festival and had dinner with director Howard Avedis, who later cast her in "Kidnapped," a Warner Bros. film starring David Naughton, where she would meet her future husband, John Witherspoon.
