The Kon-Tiki Museum (Norwegian: Kon-Tiki Museet) is a museum in the Bygdøy peninsula in Oslo, Norway. It houses vessels and maps from the Kon-Tiki expedition, as well as a library with about 8,000 books. [1]
The Kon-Tiki museum shows Thor Heyerdahl's famous life's work, which is characterized by a desire for research, environmental protection and sustainability and deep respect for indigenous peoples. The exhibits include the original balsa raft from the Kon-Tiki expedition and the reed boat Ra II.
The museum presents the breadth of Heyerdahl’s life’s work, from his first trip to Fatu Hiva, to the voyages with the Kon-Tiki, the Ra, the Ra II and the Tigris, as well as the expeditions to the Galàpagos Islands, Easter Island (Rapa Nui) and Tùcume in Peru.
After the world-famous and sensational Kon-Tiki expedition in 1947, the Kon-Tiki museum opened in Oslo. Everyone wanted to see the primitive Kon-Tiki raft built according to prehistoric knowledge. The museum was opened in a temporary building in 1949, and got its current premises in 1957.
