On November 19, 1952, Bellson married American actress and singer Pearl Bailey, in London. Bellson and Bailey adopted a son, Tony, in the mid-1950s, and a daughter, Dee Dee (born April 20, 1960). After Bailey's death in 1990, Bellson married Francine Wright in September 1992.
On November 19, 1952, Bailey married jazz drummer Louie Bellson in London. They remained married until her death nearly 38 years later in 1990. Bellson was six years Bailey's junior and white. Interracial couples were rare at that time, and Bellson's father was reportedly opposed to the marriage because of Bailey's race.
Dee Dee Bellson was a jazz vocalist who sang with her mother Pearl Bailey and her father Louie Bellson. She died in 2009 after a heart attack and was featured on recordings by Weather Report and Wayne Shorter.
