Richard Hanley Jaeckel (October 10, 1926 – June 14, 1997) was a famous actor who portrayed Al Gibson in the pilot episode of Season 1 and Ben Edwards from 1991-1994. He was also best known for his Western and Army movies and died at the age of 70 after a three-year battle with melanoma cancer.
From 1991-94 he played Lt. Ben Edwards on the hit series Baywatch (1989). He passed away after a three-year battle with melanoma cancer on June 14, 1997, at the Motion Picture and Television Hospital in Woodland Hills, California. Jaeckel was 70 years old.
