Background
Zarah and Andre Laytonwere a couple by the time that the tragedy struck. She wanted to join the family in order to face the situation together and almost certainly die in a short time, but Andre convinced her to attempt to board Snowpiercer by force instead, which they did. She came to resent that decision, having trouble adjusting to the rigors of life as a Tailie.

Zarah first makes contact with Layton after numerous years when her partner, Sean Wise, is murdered. Zarah tells Layton that she didn't know what else to do, and Layton accepts this but remarks that the two are very different people.
