Jul 20, 2018 · A $64 million expansion project completed prior to the start of the 2005 football season featured the addition of nearly 3,000 seats, including 24 suites and a 193-seat press box, bringing the stadium capacity to 75,005. “The Spartan” statue was relocated to the atrium of the new structure.

The initial seat capacity of the stadium in 1923 was only at 14,000. In 1935, the school increased the seating capacity to 26,000 and the newly renovated arena was dedicated as Macklin Field. The name Macklin Field was given in honor of former coach John Macklin.
On any regular Saturday in the fall, Spartan Stadium holds more than 75,000 Spartan football fans cheering on our home team to victory. Since its opening in 1923, Michigan State has won 70% of its games played in Spartan Stadium.
