The Call is the first episode of the first season of The Night Agent.

While working the night action desk, FBI agent Peter receives a distress call and is soon put in charge of protecting cybersecurity expert Rose.

Peter Sutherland is on the Washington D.C. Metro where he generously gives up his seat for a mother and her young daughter. He notices a suspicious-looking man leave a backpack on the train. Peter investigates and realizes it's a bomb. He pulls the emergency stop lever on the train and shows his FBI badge. The passengers react to the news of a bomb and flee. Peter goes back to help the mother and daughter. The bomb detonates seconds after he's off the train.

A police officer looks over Peter and determines he might have a concussion. He asks how many are dead; just one, so it could have been worse. When the officer leaves, Peter notices a man fitting the description of the bomber in the crowd and chases him. They end up in an alley, and the bomber ambushes Peter. They fight, and Peter sees the snake tattoo on his side. He chases the bomber into the street and is hit by a car, which lets the suspect escape.

Rose Larkin prepares for her Ted Talk about cybersecurity. A woman puts a microphone on her, and then Rose's assistant brings her the seed funding documents to sign.

One year later, Peter wakes up at 5:00 PM for his night shift at The White House. He goes through security and meets with Diane Farr, who shows him a video from Rome Tome. Elliot Rome, the person in the video, accuses Peter of being involved in the bombing that night, claiming to have new evidence as proof. Elliot brings up Peter's father. He sold out the country and killed himself. Peter snaps that his father died in a car accident and wasn't charged. Peter learns Deputy Director Hawkins sent the video to Farr. She reminds him that everyone, including the president and herself, believes in him. Farr has him practice saying "No comment." She reminds him of their deal; he pays his dues in Night Action, and better things will come his way. Both Diane and Hawkins have to sign off on a promotion. She gives him a file to mark up on her way out.

Peter heads to the basement, where the director of the secret service Ben Almora reminds Peter of the president's pick-up basketball game tomorrow. He still wants Peter to work for him in the Secret Service, but Peter isn't willing to take a bullet for someone just because they got more votes than someone else. They're interrupted by Hawkins, who talks to Peter about a report Diane assigned him. Peter's supposed to report to both Diane and Hawkins. He suggests Peter hitch his wagon to someone else.

At exactly eight o'clock, Peter takes over for the other agent on night action duty. He starts going over the file Diane gave him.
