Well, ever since Françoise Hardy did her adaptation of our song Sleep in French, we’d had this idea of maybe doing a French version of one of our songs at a later time. I suppose my spending last winter writing songs in Nice, France, had something to do with making the idea seem more tangible. When I got back, I believe it was Olli who suggested we’d give it a shot with The Sweet Escape. I’m in no way fluent in French, but I do speak “un peu” and of course, I love the language, so I thought it was worth a try. Turns out the song sounds pretty damn good in “en Français”. Our hope of course is that others will agree with us, once they hear the it. I know it’s a one off for us, since my writing works best for me in English (or in Finnish) and adapting a text into a different language takes a lot of effort. Besides Poets of the Fall is ultimately sung in English, so… But hey, try anything once… ... Yes, I took it upon myself to write the adaptation. Intimidating and fascinating. And of course, I didn’t do it alone. I enlisted the wonderful help of a fellow musician and producer Laurent Sari, who is French. He was a huge help. Together we were able to talk through all the fine details and minute differences in meanings in the original lyric and decide what and how to convey the story in French. Stuff I couldn’t have known with my limited grasp of the French language.

It’s never easy to work on an adaptation. If you translate word for word, you will obviously lose the rhymes. If you keep the rhymes, you may lose some of the song meaning. Luckily, I was working with Marko and he speaks French so between the both of us, we managed to create the adaptation. Looking back, it was not particularly difficult as Marko knew his original lyrics well and therefore it was a smooth process. What was remarkable working on that song was how precise Marko’s ear was. He was able to sing in French very quickly which is usually difficult to do. No problem for him! Everything was recorded rather fast.

I can tell you that it was a fast shoot! I think the band was in the middle of a tour and scheduling for the project was not the easiest thing to do. We had fairly limited amount of time to set everything up. We had a few different concepts for the video in mind but decided to go with the one that was released (obviously 😄). ... The source of inspiration for me was really the 80’s vibe of the song. I wanted to have this kinda old school film look to the video. Wet pavement and city lights were also mandatory. I wanted it to be very intimate but also grandiose at the same time! It’s centered around one person carrying an item through the night. One glimpse at this person’s timeline. All those people who pass by have their own packages to carry, their own problems, their own sources of happiness etc. So on a conceptual level it’s this one particular life in this vast city of lights (and lives) and colors and people and whatnot. To emphasize that concept and the old school film look I used the widest anamorphic lens I could find that also did some crazy distortions to the image. You can be pretty close to your subject but still get this huge field of view. ... We wanted to have a little different angle on it while still retaining the same spirit in both projects as they’re essentially the same video, just in different languages. Some subtle changes in color palette came along as a way to recognize and visualize those differing lyrics. Also, we wanted to take the opportunity to tell a little larger story if you watch both of the videos back-to-back. Partir Avec Moi kinda shows you a little more of what happened that night. Gives you a little different perspective. 1.retrieved 20.09.23 2.retrieved 20.09.23 3.retrieved 20.09.23
