Jun 6, 2019 · The Wave. Overview. "The Wave” is part of Coyote Buttes North and require a permit to hike. Each day, only 20 lucky people get to hike this beautiful, fragile land. In 2018, approximately 160,000 people applied (online/walk-in) and only 7,300 people get the permit to hike.
The Wave is named for its rounded water-like contours, and flowing streaks of red. This other-worldly formation dates back 190 million years to the Jurassic age. The Wave’s rippling “waves” of warm color contrasting with bright blue skies make it a magnet for landscape photographers.
