  1. TORONTO -- Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos doubled down early Tuesday morning by pulling off a blockbuster trade with the Rockies for All-Star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, but make no mistake, the move was as much about the future as it was a run at the postseason.

    • Tulowitzki is still productive, but his power may be in decline. This season, he's batting .300/.348/.471 with 12 homers in 351 plate appearances. On the one hand, Tulo's average distance of his fly balls and home runs is right in line with his 2014 levels, as are his rates of hard-hit balls; on the other, he ranks a somewhat middling 66th in average velocity off the bat.
    • For Tulo's purposes, Rogers Centre compares somewhat favorably to Coors Field. As is the case when any hitter comes down from baseball at a mile above sea level, we wonder how his production will translate.
    • From the Blue Jays' 2015 perspective, the marginal gain might be smaller than you think. Advanced projection systems provide us with our best guess at near-term outlooks.
    • The money matters. Tulowitzki, of course, is under contract through 2020. Over that span, he's owed the balance of a $20 million salary for this season, and from 2016-20 he's owed $90 million plus a $4-million buyout on his $15-million option for 2021.
  2. Aug 12, 2015 · Gibbons made Tulowitzki the leadoff hitter, bunching Tulo, Josh Donaldson, Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion atop a power-packed lineup. Tulowitzki had scored 12 runs in his 11 starts.
