Japan takes tax avoidance very serious for high profile cases like this. There's precedent as well. The author of Log Horizon nearly went to jail, but was able to pay off his fine of 120 million yen (at the time US$1 million) and was put on house arrest.

Asian ppl are pretty srs about public figure’s behaviors, ie. tax fraud or drinking driving or using cocaine or sleeping with a married person, their career just crashes to rock bottom. I guess tax fraud is one of the best of the worst.
