Frost came of age during a time when modernism was the dominant movement in American and European literature. Yet, distinct from his contemporaries, Frost was a staunchly un-modern poet.
Robert Lee Frost was born in San Francisco, California, on March 26, 1874. His father, William, came from Maine and New Hampshire ancestry and had graduated from Harvard in 1872. Robert Lee Frost (March 26, 1874 – January 29, 1963) was born in San Francisco, CA, the son of a teacher/journalist, William Prescott Frost, Jr., and Isabelle Moodie Frost. His father died when Robert was ten years old, and Robert moved to Lawrence, MA with his mother and his sister, Jeanie, to live with his paternal grandparents.
His father died when he was ten. His first son, Eliot, died at four. His daughter, Marjorie, married and then died from a childbirth infection. He lived for 25 years after Mrs. Frost died. Five years after her death their other son, Carol-“who had the seeds of genius in him”-destroyed himself. Another daughter was an invalid.
