Crickhowell is a small market town with many individual shops, ancient inns and plenty to do for visitors and residents. A settlement has existed here at least since iron-age settlers built a fort on the top of Crug Hywel, also called Table Mountain after its flat top.

The ruins of the 12th- century Crickhowell or “Alisby’s” Castle are little more than a remnant of the original motte-and-bailey fortification, surrounded by green space and a play area, which lends itself well to picnicking.
