Eduard van der Nüll was born and died in Vienna. After studying at the Vienna Polytechnical Institute [1] (alongside, among others, Peter von Nobile , Paul Wilhelm Eduard Sprenger and Carl Roesner ), he and his friend August Sicard von Sicardsburg made extensive trips through Western Europe for purposes of study.
Eduard van der Nüll committed suicide, and barely ten weeks later Sicardsburg died from tuberculosis so neither architect saw the completion of the building. They were appointed Professors at the Akademie in Vienna (1844), and thus influenced later Viennese architects. With van der Nüll he designed several Viennese buildings, including the Arsenal and KommandanturGebäude (1848–55), but they are best known for the Opera House on the Ringstrasse (1861–9) in a free Renaissance style.
