Gaia, along with her mother, identifies as a Greenpeace activist. Greenpeace is an environmental organization dedicated to non-violent means of protecting the natural world. Gaia has worked on behalf of the organization in the UK, even travelling to the Antarctic in the fight against climate change.
Gaia was named after the Greek mythological figure, Gaia, the goddess and personification of Earth. In Greek mythology, Gaia is the mother to Uranus (the sea), Pontus (the sky), the Cyclopes, and the Giants. Simply put, Emma Thompson named her after the soul of the earth, which is very fitting for an environmental activist.
Her father is the esteemed English actor and producer, Greg Wise. Wise met Emma Thompson on the set of Sense and Sensibilityin 1995. When Gaia was 15-years-old, she chose to switch high schools after her classmates shunned her for her environmentalism. She was repeatedly taunted for her activism after participating in a Greenpeace campaign. In an interview with The Mail, she divulged,“When I came back, I got a lot of people telling me to stop being such a hippy.”
Once Gaia removed herself from Highgate School, her parents began to homeschool her with the help of a private tutor. Her father built her a "school room" in the middle of their garden. The rest of her high schoolyears were spent outdoors, which suited her love of nature.
Gaia isn’t the only child of Emma Thompson and Greg Wise. She has an older brother named Tindyebwa Agaba Wise. Her parents adopted Tindyebwa, a former Rwandan refugeeand child soldier, when he was 16-years-old. Tindy, now 33 years-old, runs a charity organization that helps African refugees and asylum-seekers by providing them financial-guidance.
