Lightning bolt emanates from your hands extending in a line 100 feet long and 5 feet wide (surface area = 500 ft).
Lightning bolt is more effective when spaces are enclosed, like bottlenecks, corridors, and such, but maneuvering them is much tougher. Where fireball fails (because fire resistance), lightning bolt does the job. When lightning damage is resisted, fireball could be used. Again, foresight.

Jul 9, 2022 · Some would argue that Lightning bolt is even better than Fireball. The likelihood of encountering a fire-resistant or fire immune creature is far greater than encountering an electricity resistant or electricity immune creature like a blue dragon or storm giant.

5th Edition. I’m playing a blue draconic sorcerer. Which should I go for first? Lightning Bolt, which plays into my lightning theme, or Fireball because it does a little more battlefield control? I imagine enemies are more likely to clump up for fireball damage more than they are to line up for lightning bolt damage.

There is no randomness, no chaining to targets, nothing that really screams sorcerer other than straight energy. At least fireball can wrap around corners even if the sorcerer doesn't want it to. 2.
