There are 7 sections to the chart, including consonants and other symbols , vowels, non-pulmonic consonants, diacritics, suprasegmentals, tones / word accents.
The phoneme /ʎ/ is distinguished from /ʝ/ in some areas in Spain (mostly northern and rural) and South America (mostly highland). Other accents of Spanish, comprising the majority of speakers, have lost the palatal lateral as a distinct phoneme and have merged historical /ʎ/ into /ʝ/: this is called yeísmo.
The IPA chart allows us to compare sounds across languages using this common written phonetic alphabet. If you know how a foreign word is written phonetically using the IPA, you can both compare the pronunciation with familiar sounds native to your language, and also understand how to correctly pronounce any word.
