Many of the highest peaks in Shenandoah National Park (including Hawksbill, Stony Man, and Hightop Mountain, just to name a few) are underlain by distinctive bluish-green rocks that were once ancient lava flows (Virginia is for Lavas!), and are part of a geologic unit known as the Catoctin Formation.

Virginia is home to a number of mountain ranges and ridges that stretch across the east coast of the United States. Much of the mountain ranges are interconnected by regions. The two parent mountain ranges in Virginia are the Appalachian Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains which consist of numerous sub-ranges.

Whitetop Mountain is the second highest summit in Virginia with an elevation of 5,525 ft (1,684 m) It can be found within the Grayson Highlands State Park in southwest Virginia off of Rt. 58.
