The Prater ( German pronunciation: [ˈpraːtɐ] ⓘ) is a large public park in Leopoldstadt, Vienna, Austria. The Wurstelprater, an amusement park that is often simply called "Prater", lies in one corner of the Wiener Prater and includes the Wiener Riesenrad Ferris wheel.
The Bohemian Prater (German: Böhmischer Prater) is a small amusement park at the edge of Vienna, in Favoriten, Vienna's 10th district. The Viennese Prater was first mentioned in 1162 under the name Pratum in a deed of gift from Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa to Conrad de Prato. Pratum is Latin and means meadow or pasture. During World War II, bombs and the construction of trenches destroyed large parts of the Prater area. A large part of the Wurstelprater fell victim to fire in April 1945. After 1945, the Wurstelprater rebuilt with the help of private initiatives, and the devastated Prater grounds afforested by the Vienna public park authorities.
