Reasonable Doubt, despite its appealing cast of Samuel L. Jackson and Dominic Cooper, struggles to be anything more than a mediocre thriller dumped for release in the heart of winter. At least its Chicago setting is suitably cold.

The film stars Cooper as district attorney Mitch Brockden, a new dad with a devoted wife and promising career ahead of him. After a poor drunken decision, he’s involved in a hit-and-run accident that leaves a man dead and another man, Clinton Davis (Jackson), accused of murder. Brockden’s guilty conscience leads him to throw the case and get Davis freed, only to discover that he just freed a dangerous man.

The premise is intriguing enough, as the film draws interesting parallels between these two men that are seemingly from different walks of life. Davis’ tragic backstory is that his wife and child were killed in a brutal home invasion, which gives Brockden legitimate sympathy for a man with the evidence stacked against him (well, that and the fact that he already knows that it’s himself who is responsible for the accident). Unfortunately, the rest of Brockden’s attributes leave the viewer caring little for his plight, wishing instead that he would get what he deserves.Reasonable Doubt introduces Brockden as a cocky attorney that leaves his newborn daughter and exhausted wife at home to go drinking, after which the aforementioned hit-and-run occurs. Then he makes the decision to leave the man dying, under the guise that it will tear his family apart if he gets caught (the same family he left to go drinking and drive home drunk to). To make matters worse, his wife’s first concern when she learns he drove home drunk is that it’ll ruin his career. Her family, apparently, is secondary. Kicking the film off on that note gives little incentive for us to care about Brockden and instead feel bad for his wife for marrying such a jerk.

Reasonable Doubt contains nothing you haven’t seen before and everything that you’ve seen done better. Even if the January/February months are sparse on interesting movie releases, you’re better off finding a movie to stream on Netflix from the comfort of your living room than to watch this flick.
