Richard, 3rd Duke of York was born on 21st September 1411, the second surviving child and first surviving son of Richard of Conisburgh, later Earl of Cambridge and his wife Anne Mortimer. Richard of Conisburgh was the younger son of Edmund, 1st Duke of York and therefore a grandson of King Edward III.
Oct 27, 2023 · Richard of York, 3rd Duke of York (21 September 1411 – 30 December 1460), also named Richard Plantagenet, was a leading English magnate and claimant to the throne during the Wars of the Roses.
There was a strong counterclaim to the throne that stemmed back to the usurping of King Richard II and the young Richard was in line to be the claimant. Richard’s significance grew quite quickly. His uncle, Edward 2nd Duke of York, was killed at the Battle of Agincourt. Childless, his heir was Richard.
