Elizabeth Woodville was born in about 1437 (no record of her birth survives), at Grafton Regis, Northamptonshire. She was the firstborn child of a socially unequal marriage between Richard Woodville, 1st Earl Rivers, and Jacquetta of Luxembourg, which briefly scandalised the English court.

Early in 1468 Rivers's estates were plundered by Warwick's partisans, and the open war of the following year was aimed to destroy the Woodvilles. After the king's defeat at Edgecot , Rivers and his second son, John, were taken prisoners at Chepstow and executed at Kenilworth on the 12th of August 1469.

Following distinguished service in France, he remained attached to the Lancastrian court, fighting on the losing side at Towton.
Richard Woodville (c. 1410-1469) was a knight in the service of John Duke of Bedford and married Bedford’s widow, Jacquetta. He was made Baron Rivers in 1448 and despite fighting for the Lancastrians at Towton had become one of Edward IV’s counsellors by 1463. His daughter Elizabeth secretly married Edward IV the following year.
