Mar 24, 2016 · St Vitus Cathedral is a Gothic church with some Neo-Gothic addition. It was founded in 1344 and finished in 1929 – nearly 600 years after it was begun. The building process came to a halt as the Hussite War began in the 15 th century and later a great fire damaged the cathedral.
The history of St Vitus Cathedral is almost as old as Prague Castle itself. The first sanctuary on the place of present St Vitus Cathedral was built by Wenceslas I, Duke of Bohemia, in 926-30 as the third church built at Prague Castle. The founder Wenceslas was also buried there.

The Cathedral is located in the Prague Castle, with the construction of the temple beginning in 1344, commissioned by the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles IV. The building was reconstructed and redesigned in several occasions by different architects, coming to a standstill during the Hussite Wars.
Visitors enter the Cathedral through the portal in the western facade, opposite the passage-way between the Second and Third Courtyard of Prague Castle. Its bronze door is decorated with reliefs with scenes from the history of the Cathedral and from the legends about St. Wenceslas and St. Adalbert.
