The first cell theory is credited to the work of Theodor Schwann and Matthias Jakob Schleiden in the 1830s. In this theory the internal contents of cells were called protoplasm and described as a jelly-like substance, sometimes called living jelly.
Schwann was one of the first scientists to break away from vitalism to lean toward a mechanistic or physico-chemical explanation of living processes which proposed that the biological processes in cells and living beings could be explained by physical and chemical phenomena.
A German physiologist who, in collaboration with M. J. Schleiden, proposed the cell theory (and coined the term), according to which all plant and animal tissues are composed of cells, and within an individual organism all the cells are identical (see also Virchow, Rudolf).
