From 1973 through 1977, Tom Waits released five studio albums on Asylum Records (yes, Nighthawks was a studio album).

Every nook and cranny of “Blue Valentine” bleeds authenticity from Tom. Even if there are certain situations he describes that he hasn’t had a first-hand experience with, it’s still entirely illustrative of the societal issues he felt great empathy towards.
Mar 24, 2013 · For someone dead-set in their jazzy undertones, Blue Valentine seems like a welcome diversion from the norm for Tom Waits. The instrumentation takes on a far more punchy, electric, and bluesy vibe than his previous records that typically only gravitated to this sound on occasion.
