He is recognized, with his close contemporaries Herman Melville and Walt Whitman, as a key figure in the development of a distinctly American literature. Like Melville, Hawthorne was preoccupied with New England 's religious past.
Upon returning home to Concord seven years later, his health deteriorated. He was buried in 1864 in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. Now his labor of love is celebrated in a handsome two volume set of his writings issued as part of The Library of America.
