Aug 9, 2019 · The first English settlers arrived here in April of 1670 and established a camp on the west side of the Ashley River (now Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site). That campsite would eventually grow into a wee town, but when did it acquire a name? The earliest reference to the town’s name that I know of dates from the autumn of 1670.
