While obviously nothing happens in a vacuum, I'd argue that Doo-wop is something of an evolutionary dead end in pop music. It's kind of difficult to isolate Doo-wop, both its influences and influencees, because it fits into such a long tradition of vocal music and is harmonically pretty simple.

Remember, the earliest rock and roll was usually quite adult oriented, rife with references to booze and sex. There was some of that in doo wop, but nowhere near as much.
