At the end of April 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic in Russia, Nurmagomedov was hospitalized in the 2nd city hospital of Makhachkala with bilateral pneumonia caused by COVID-19. Having been taken to Moscow in early May on a private jet, his condition rapidly worsened, and he died there on 3 July 2020, from COVID complications.
