Abner and Susannah are the ancestors of southwestern West Virginia Vances. Uncle Jim "Bad" Vance was a leading instigator in the feud and assigned assassin of most of the McCoys. He killed his first McCoy, Asa Harmon McCoy, hid out in a Kentucky cave in 1865.
