    Those are the dulcet tones of Alan Steadman, the new voice of the Speaking Clock. To mark 80 years of the famous talking clock, BT held a nationwide competition to find the fifth permanent voice of the British institution. Mr Steadman’s is the first non-English accent to grace the service, which started operating on July 24 1936.

    The 69-year old hails from Dundee, Scotland, and retired from a career in the civil service in 2007. He honed his silky voice hosting a weekly local jazz programme, first on Tayside’s Radio Tay, and later on Dundee’s Wave 102 FM.     Only Mr Steadman’s partner and his 93-year old mother knew he had made it to the final of the competition – he even had to keep it secret from his granddaughter, who has been wondering why he’s had to miss giving her her weekly piano lesson.

    “Both excited and nervous,” apparently. “Recording the clock was an interesting experience! I found that your eyes begin to blur a bit because of all the numbers that you’re reading, but I think it went OK.”
