Ali Kazim's figurative paintings explore the human body as a physical entity that goes through spiritual and emotional stresses throughout the day, setting pensive South Asian figures with downcast eyes against backgrounds of bold expressive colours.
Kazim creates layered, textured watercolours and drawings, primarily of desolate landscapes and solitary figures. Inspired by the art and history of the Indian subcontinent, Kazim’s meticulous brushwork draws upon miniature painting techniques, capturing the finest details, for instance individual strands of hair.
Having trained initially at the National College of Art, Lahore and then subsequently the Slade School of Fine Art, Ali Kazim has devised a distinctive painting practice informed by various traditions of South Asian miniature painting.

Ali Kazim: Suspended in Time will show 23 works including new pieces made from 2019-21, alongside objects from the Ashmolean’s collections which have inspired Kazim’s work. The exhibition will be the culmination of his time as Oxford University’s first South Asian Artist-in-Residence.
