She was not from the musical world and in her Bax had a mother figure – a woman of unerring loyalty and security. He did not break his liaison with Harriet Cohen who remained unaware of Miss Greaves until 1948!
Sep 23, 2014 · Bax’s 4th symphony written in Morar – while Mary Gleaves read to him with memories of silent green and gold days – but it is, besides, a symphony. It is entirely characteristic of Bax that Harriet Cohen didn’t learn of Mary Gleaves’ existence for twenty years.
Sadly there were to be no later volumes. Bax was born of wealthy parents in Streatham, London, on 8 November 1883. Their move to the house, Ivybank in Streatham in 1893 coincided with his father beginning to take him to August Manns’ Crystal Palace concerts. By 1896 Bax had begun to compose profusely.
