The Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex (also spelled "Bartholomeu") is the second biggest provincial museum affiliated to the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport in South Africa. It is located at Mossel Bay.
The Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex in Mossel Bay, South Africa is home to the famous 500 year old Post Office Tree and life-size replica of the Dias Caravel.
It is here where the Portuguese seafarer Bartolomeu Dias, the first European who managed to sail around the southern tip of Africa, landed in 1488. Dias’s journey not only opened the sea route between Europe and Asia but would eventually lead to the colonisation of southern Africa.
A very interesting display of models, maps and artefacts which is crowned by a life-size replica of Dias tiny ‘ship’. Outside the hall where the aforementioned exhibits sit are several other features of the complex, including some historic houses.
